Procedure

The proceedure for making the Radar section was really quite easy. First I started by cutting the masonite into 10 circles, 5 at 6 7/8 and 5 at 7 1/8. I sanded all the circles making sure not to damage the edges. After those were finished I simply glued them together, ending with a larger piece on top. I then took a 1 1/2 inch hole saw and cut a hole in the center of this section. After that I took a piece of 3 inch PVC pipe and cut a 3/8 inch part off the end . Then, using the Plummers Goop I attached the ring to the center of the top section I had just made. Next came the hard part, (at least for me), I had to start working on the "Fins". The first thing I did was to lay out the top of the radar in 8 equal sections for the fin placement. Using my Bandsaw I then cut 8 grooves, 1/4 inch wide and 1/4 inch deep at each of the eight layout lines. Next was to cut the fins the exact right height to fit on top of the radar and snug to the PVC piece I attached earlier. After that it was a simple matter to just glue them to the top section of the radar. I then laid all that aside so all the glue could cure overnight.

Next came the lower section of the radar which really was not as hard as the top. I simply cut 3 pieces of plywood that totaled up to 1 1/4 inch thick and 12 5/8 round. I then cut the center out of two of those pieces leaving a 1 inch circle about 1 inch deep. On the third piece I cut the same 1 1/2 inch hole that I cut in the top section and then glued the three pieces together. After applying a couple coats of sanding sealer I then began the sanding process, a lot of sanding. I then primed the part and continued to sand and prime until I got them as close to perfect as I could get.

Finally I attached the two sections together with wood glue and drywall screws and let it sit till the next day so the glue could harden.

I used "Testors" model paint on the ear spinners and the yellow was really a bright yellow and the red came out looking a little bright orange-red but I like the look so that is how it will stay.

Over the winter I plan on rebuilding the Radar section because I have a great idea on how to make it more impressive. If it works I will tell you all how I did it.

I tried my idea and I was right, it really is more impressive but I am not ready to show the world, yet.

Finished

These will be rebuilt when i get my new ear motors With several coats of sanding sealer Not the best picture but you get the point

As you can see my Robot will not be perfect, but it will never be seen by anyone but my immediate family anyway.
